Learning at home, in class or after school
Tutoring at home

Arrangements can be made for private tutoring emphasizing reading and writing development for subjects such as English, History, Geography and Art.

Splendid Stories, Awesome Art: A Classroom Course for grades 3 -6

Occasional.

Do some sleuthing with Encyclopedia Brown by Donald J Sobol, as well as read and discuss a variety of novels, short stories and poems. Books may include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Door in the Wall, The Wheel on the School…

A little “art appreciation” will round out the class, as we examine paintings by some of the world’s greatest artists.

A variety of short writing assignments will complement the literature discussed. (There can be flexibility in these assignments based on the needs of the student).
Novels can be borrowed from the library or purchased.

Logic and Literature: A classroom course for Grades 6-9

Occasional.

Can you identify bad reasoning? You may know what a loaded gun is, but do you know what a “loaded question” is? And are you tricked by “circular reasoning”? We’ll look at the assumptions we make and how they can lead us astray. Then we’ll move on to statistical fallacies (Post hoc ergo propter hoc anyone?).

From logic we’ll turn detective on literature – sleuthing out the conflict, themes, characters and other literary devices. We’ll read and discuss a variety of short stories, novels and poems. In past years we’ve read The Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konigsburg and 2013”s Newberry Honour winner The Paperboy by Vince Vawter.

We will also tour the world and see some of the greatest natural and historic sites. In your imaginations and in your reading you will visit places such as the Rock of Gibraltar, the Panama Canal or the Taj Mahal.

From the literature and the adventure writing, you will learn new writing skills for both fiction and nonfiction topics. Learn to compose your writing in different forms – including paragraphs and powerpoint presentations.

A variety of in class and at home writing assignments will complement the literature discussed. (There can be flexibility in these assignments based on the needs of the student).
